Belcher, Smolen & Van Loo is a law firm serving business clients at every point in their growth, from seed-stage financing to cross-border M&A.

We are a boutique law firm based in Silicon Valley and San Francisco serving our business clients at every point in their life cycle.  We represent technology, life sciences and financial services companies in M&A, venture capital, joint ventures and other corporate finance transactions.  Leveraging our experience in the technology and financial services sectors, we also enjoy a growing practice serving blockchain and cryptocurrency clients.

As a boutique firm, we take pride in providing our clients with greater attention and priority than larger firms and focus on both their business and legal needs.  Yet unlike other boutique firms, we are not corporate “generalists.” Rather, we have deep experience and specialization in areas such as M&A transactions, business income tax and international tax, and intellectual property and technology.

Because we have specialized experience in M&A, IP and tax, and maintain niche practices (such as representing foreign companies establishing a presence in the United States, aiding clients with Open Source Software compliance, and advising on the tax aspects of ICOs), our clients are not only in Silicon Valley, but also located across the country and the globe, including in particular, New York, Boston, London, Germany and the rest of the EU, China and India.  Our experience is both broad and deep, giving us the ability to provide the type of specialized business and legal experience that our clients require.

Each of us brings unique experience and skills, but we share certain things in common – we are each graduates of some of the top law schools in the country, and have experience at some of the largest and most prestigious law firms in the world.  We also have experience at leading tax and IP boutique firms, along with significant experience leading teams within in-house legal departments of leading technology, medical device, eCommerce, and financial services companies, all combining to give us unique insight into client expectations and needs.
